Blog Basics

It has been about a few months that I have started my blog and I am still in the process of learning about “The Blog World”.

It just flashed in my mind of having a category of “Blog” and sharing all my notes / learning in this category. So said, here goes about What is a Blog and its basic terminology.

A blog is a type of a website maintained by an individual with regular entries or posts, arranged in a reverse chronological order. Generally, each entry combines text, images, links to other blogs, websites and at times audio and video. It can be considered as an online dairy or a journal.

Most important thing is that the term blog and weblog are interchangeable. The term blog is derived from the word weblog which was first coined by Mr. Jorn Bagger (You can read more from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jorn_Barger) to describe the process of “logging the web”. Later on Mr. Peter Merholz shortened the term from weblog to wee-blog or blog. So next time you come across the term weblog don’t be surprised.

When compared to the traditional website there are some very good features available in the blog. Some of the good features are – Blogroll, Comments, Permalink.
Blogroll - list of author’s favorite / recommended blogs.
Comments - the user can leave his opinion in the comments section present after every entry, which would make the site more interactive than a traditional website.
Permalink – also called as Permanent Link, is a link to a permanent page where readers will always be able to access the post, as opposed to the blog’s ever changing front page.

As per wikipedia, there are about 6 types of blogs – Personal blogs, Corporate blogs, Question Blogging, By Media Type, By device and By genre. You can find more on these at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blog.

That is about the basic information about the Wee - blog. Do share your comments, if any.
